Care to Practice/Practice to Care? is Déda’s first two-week choreography intensive project as part of Choreo-Lounge, a new initiative that brings people, practice, and critical discourse together.

It is open to dancers at all stages of their careers, with an interest in making and is facilitated by award winning choreographer Roberta Jean, www.robertajean.org

Roberta works collaboratively with artists and makers from across disciplines to produce dances for a diverse range of contexts. She fosters safe creative spaces where dance artists feel comfortable and relaxed enough to reach states of vulnerability, to let go of performing and focus more on exploring and investigating movement in the early stages of developing new work. Roberta has presented at Sadler’s Wells, Tanzmesse, Dance4 and Dance Umbrella amongst others. She is the 2020 winner of the Bonnie Bird Choreographic Development Award, a 2019 finalist at Aesthetica Short Film Festival, New Renaissance Film Festival and a 2018 finalist for the Total Theatre & The Place Dance Award.

Déda has taken care to make participation financially accessible. After the disruption of the pandemic, Déda welcomes dancers to reconnect with themselves, their practice and their creative peers.

Week One: 1st - 5th August

Facilitated Practice

10.00am – 4.30pm

Five-days of facilitated choreographic practice. Start the day with body based practices that help you connect with yourself, the group and awaken your choreographic imagination. Then delve into choreographic strategies and processes that support your investigation and development of new work.

Week Two: 8th– 12th August

Open Studio

10am – 4.30pm

Five days of open studio practice where you can develop and deepen your investigations from week one. Week Two: Open Studio creates opportunities to work together, to invite people in and to work alone. Roberta Jean will be online offering choreographic mentoring to assist you in your investigations and choreographic development. For those keen to develop works-in-progress, there is the possibility to perform works as part of Derby Festé in September. This week is further fortified by a series of daily lunchtime lectures with artists who situate care as a central proposition in their work. These lectures serve to inspire and situate practice within a critically reflective frame. Artists include: Claire Cunningham, Luke Pell, Justin Hunt and Kayla Dougan Bowtell.
