Sarah is a freelance dance and theatre artist based in South Derbyshire. She has extensive experience working as a multi-skilled performer and maker across dance, theatre and puppetry. Being part of devised work, with a strong collaborative approach is a particular interest, as well as performing outdoors and in unusual spaces and places.
Sarah is currently touring Autin Dance Theatre’s stunning outdoor work, Out of the Deep Blue as dancer/puppeteer. She is rehearsal director for the wonderful Spiltmilk Dance, as well as choreographic mentor for their ambitious community dance project, It’s Your Move and has recently become a Dance Ambassador for NDCWales.
Career highlights include three years touring Tell Tale Hearts’ beautifully quirky dance theatre piece Yummm! nationally and internationally, devising and performing in the outdoor works Gift by Beautiful Creatures and the wonderfully dark The Quiet by Glasshouse Dance and a national rural tour of the hilarious Blast from the Past with Spiltmilk Dance. Sarah has also performed and toured nationally and internationally with Coreo Cymru/ Wales Millenium Centre, The Gramophones, Birmingham Opera Company and Katie Green.
For several years she has lectured at University of Derby, specialising in Physical Theatre and from 2022 will become an Associate lecturer at Lincoln University teaching on the MA degree. Since 2018, Sarah has been steering group member for East Midlands Dance Artist Network (EMDAN). Through the network and with support from Dance4, Deda, The Hub and Lincoln University, she has successfully organised Contemporary Classes across Nottingham, Derby and Lincoln, both online and in person, and regularly leads Open Contemporary Class in Nottingham and Derby.
Sarah’s practice includes release, somatic and floor based techniques. Her classes focus on breath, space and intention and include set and improvised material with plenty of option for self interpretation. Sequences focus on transition in and out of the floor, core strength and travelling through and around the space. From a performance perspective, Sarah likes to play with imagery and spoken word to offer varying intension and dynamic possibilities to the movement material.
Open Contemporary Class is for all dance artists and movers working in all areas of the dance industry. Although some experience/ training in dance and movement is useful, all levels are welcome.
